Mini gastric bypass surgery is a modified version of gastric bypass surgery. At Tijuana Bariatrics, Dr. Fernando Garcia creates a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach, which is connected with the bowels to reduce absoption of nutrients. During mini gastric bypass, Dr. Garcia uses laparascopic tools so only a few incisions have to be made for surgery.
The mini-gastric bypass is one of the bariatric procedures and that surgery is almost the same as the gastric bypass. We have to divide the stomach to lift a small pouch in the upper part, and we have to connect with the bowel a little bit longer to reduce the absorption of the foods or the meals.
It's a little bit simpler than the gastric bypass; we only cut one part of the bowel. It's under laparoscopic surgery and usually we only use four or five incisions.
The patients stay at the hospital three nights, like the gastric bypass and we discharge on the fourth night or evening. We leave the chain to see if any leakage, if there is any bleeding inside the abdomen, that way we can control it immediately. We remove the chain before discharging to the hotel. We visit at the hotel or in the consult here in the hospital, and we remove the staples from the skin.
